Gothia Cup is the world’s largest youth football tournament and has been held every year in Gothenburg since 1975.
The whole concept is now going to be exported to China and to the city of Shenyang where already in August next year the first Gothia Cup China will be hosted.
From Gothia Cup’s point of view this is an exciting project that takes place in a part of the world where the sport of football has great potential. At the same time the tournament provides a platform to market the Gothia Cup in Asia.
Gothia Cup was started with the mission of bringing young people from different cultures and nationalities together. For more than 40 years, over a million participants from 143 countries have played the Gothia Cup.
– We still have the same mission, says Gothia Cup General Secretary Dennis Andersson, who is pleased to be able to present yet another meeting place for the world’s youth. Meetings that create knowledge, which creates understanding, continues Andersson, and understanding each other’s differences provide opportunities for a better world. This is what the whole Gothia Cup spirit is based on.
Shenyang is the largest city in north-eastern China with over 8 million inhabitants. The city profiles itself as China’s football capital and welcomes Gothia Cup China with open arms.
– It is simply fantastic to be part of the start of a Gothia Cup tournament in our city, says organizing committee chairman Zhang Ligong. With the assistance we will get from the Swedish organizing group we have all the potential to eventually create a tournament just as great as the original in Gothenburg.
Right now, the construction of 46 new soccer fields in Shenyang is in progress. All gathered in one place right in the city centre along the beautiful Hunhe River. The accommodation will primarily be at the city’s two universities that can offer more than 20,000 beds.
The Opening ceremony and the finals will be at the newly built Crystal Crown Arena, which holds 60,000 spectators. The forecast for the first year is approx. 800 teams from over 20 nations.
The first Gothia Cup China will take place August 13th – 20th, 2016.
